He was the first one who received master’s degree in Chinese automotive application engineering (1981), and then teaching and doing research at a university in China. He went to the United States in 1986, earned a doctoral degree at Michigan Technological University, and completed some pioneering research on computer simulation of automotive engine cooling system. He joined the General Dynamics Land System in Detroit in 1984, working as an engineering specialist in the thermal-fluid group. After 1986, he is engaged in commercial software development. He originated DCS software and enhanced VSA software. Those two system variation and tolerance analysis software has been used as an important CAM tools in cars and aircraft manufacturing in the US up to now.

His research focused on modern intelligent document technology in 2000 when he started working in the Acrobat product team in Adobe, the famous computer software company in Silicon Valley, California. He participated in compiling and reviewing the popular PDF (Portable Document Format) standard for several versions. Many of his research achievements were used in ADOBE ACROBAT, and approved as United States Utility Patents. In 2007, Prof. Chang was invited to Chang’an University in China for academic and scientific exchange. As a distinguished guest professor in the Information Engineering School, he is teaching new technology courses, mentoring PhD students, and counseling scientific research projects. He has actively supported the work for Chang’an University to apply and implement the two projects, “Chinese Ministry of education innovation team” and “Introducing talents base for discipline innovation on Vehicle-Road Information Sensing and Intelligent Transportation Systems” (111 project).
